Modern air conditioning systems are extremely efficient. Most air conditioning units are roughly 3-5 times more efficient than traditional ways of heating and cooling. For example: a 1kW electric heater will give a heat output of 1kW whereas air conditioning units will give you between 3kW and 5kW of heat output for every 1kW of electricity used!
Leaving your air conditioning on year-round could save you money. Modern air conditioning systems are inverter driven meaning they can speed up and slow down with the demands of the system rather than switching on and off.
We advise our customers to leave their air conditioning on during the summer months, allowing the system to just tick along and keep you comfortable 24/7. Just set your desired room temperature and allow the system to do its thing. Modern systems are intelligent enough to run as efficiently as possible. During winter months, you can use the same thought process. Although air conditioning systems are efficient at heating also, its not too often that customers have it in every room of the house therefore still have a requirement for traditional heating systems. There are multiple ways you can use your system throughout the winter, some of them being:
Turn off your radiators or underfloor heating in the rooms you have air conditioning. Set the temperature on the air conditioning system to your desired temperature and allow it to do its thing. This will mean that the rooms you have air conditioning in will not be drawing heat from your radiators, therefore putting less demand on your boiler, and saving you some money on gas. Your air conditioning system will be more efficient than running those radiators, even if you leave the air conditioning on 24/7.
Use your air conditioning system to heat the rooms it is installed in, giving it a boost in temperature before turning it off and allowing the radiators to then modulate the temperature. Most of the money spent in heating your home with a traditional boiler is getting the room up to temperature first. This method does depend on rooms air conditioning is installed in and where your thermostats are located.
